I Dare You
To come up with a better Babytalk Magazine cover photo than this:
I submitted it to the Evening Magazine baby photo contest, which was obviously run by people who are prejudiced against eyes. How could you possibly pass on that face?
Babytalk is currently running their cover baby contest and I would be so excited if one of you won. I've seen several of your babies and I know that one of us can nail this thing.
Speaking of Babytalk, if anyone has or will be getting an April issue, please let me know. I let my free subscription run out, but they're doing a piece on mommy bloggers in which Daring Young Mom may be mentioned. I got an email from a fact checker, verifying a quote they planned to use from the site.
The quote is about how I let my children eat off the floor and I'm not highly comfortable with its grammatical correctitude, but whatever. It's sort of exciting and I'd love to see a copy if my blog makes it into the final draft and I'm not left standing like Mike Wazowski from Monster's, Inc with the logo in front of my face.
If you could send me the article, it would save me an unneccessary appointment to the OB/GYN to gank a copy.

Nope, I can't take that dare, can't take it--ask me a "Truth" instead.
(Only because my children are no longer babies. Sob.)
So are you at all afraid your post on kids eating off the floor will end up under a title like: "Mommy Bloggers. The Black Side"? When my kids were little we used to call the area under the table the baby buffet.

I submitted a pic of little Gemma.
Hooray for you being in a magazine! You are famous!

I was contacted about the same article. WOn't that be fun if we are both mentioned. I hope it is positive because they picked a post I wrote that does not exactly paint me in the best light either LOL.
I am going to have to swipe one from the doctor's office too as I don't have a subscription.
And that is THE cutest baby picture.

My vote for a winning picture (and, yes, this one should have won), is the one Heather took of the Bean sitting on the edge of a planter last summer with her arms outstretched and looking up at someone to the photograper's left.

great pix! I posted a cute one of my baby on Tuesday
Mary, mom to many

DYM....He's adorable!
3/16/2006 6:44 AM
Nope. I never could resist those eyes. She is the most adorable of all.
3/16/2006 6:44 AM
That is a gorgeous pic! Man, you are a good photographer. I entered Cam in a few contests, but they pass on his face as well. There's just no taste! And when I get my free magazine, I'll let you know if you are in there.

If it loses, it will be due to a severe lack of Ducky.
Ducky has no doubt contacted the publisher to express his dismay over his exclusion from the photograph. A careful Photoshop job to insert Ducky and remove his rival would, assuage his feelings of jealousy.

His colouring is identical to my older son's at that age! Carl's hair got blonder then darker, but it still has that red glow to it. (NOTE* That cute face of his will someday be owned by his GIRLFRIEND. It's a sad, sad day when it happens ... *sniff* ... and way too young when they're only 13...)

I love the Baby Buffet! That's too funny.
Beautiful eyes and those cheeks!
3/16/2006 7:18 AM
OK, that is adorable. My baby may be cuter but we couldn't get any pics like that. ;) Does he look just like Laylee or is it my imagination?
That's cool about being in the magazine, though after recent experiences I've had, I too would be afraid that the only thing that would be mentioned is that my kids eat off the floor. But, if that's all they mention about you, they're stupid - they should do a whole interview with the you, since you are obviously the funniest blogger ever.

Not just a gorgeous child, but a great PHOTO!
Um, gank? We don't say that here in the South.
3/16/2006 7:33 AM
A very cute photo, I love little children!
3/16/2006 7:56 AM
What an adorable photo. I bet they'll pass on my entry too. I swear these baby magazines have no tastes. The kid on the cover of Child this month is cute, but that pic of Laylee is way cuter. (That is Laylee, isn't it? I didn't think Magoo had that much hair.)
3/16/2006 8:13 AM
Hmm, maybe it is Magoo. Boy sweater. Silly me.
Any case, ADORABLE baby pic. Should have won SOMETHING.
3/16/2006 8:16 AM
Thanks for the tip. I entered my little boy too. I also posted his pic on my blog.
3/16/2006 8:21 AM
K,
I believe you've given us all a good mystery. I think the pasted photo is of Lylee, but further in your post you mention turning in a pic of Magoo too. It seems because of that, there is confusion as to which kiddo the pasted photo actually is.
My vote goes to Lylee. What eyes!
I sent them a pic of my son in Fall '04, no love either. I suspect they never use readers babies, the contest is just a sinister way to get our addresses, hehe. Or, there are some selection criteria we are not aware of; location, income bracket, bribery level of applicant...
I request that you post the pic you submitted of Magoo (that is if I'm correct that the original pic is of Lylee)
B.

We did E once too. He was cute. They said "not cute enough."
3/16/2006 9:05 AM
OK, WHICH KID IS IT?! Now we are all curious!
3/16/2006 9:59 AM
G O R G E O U S Baby.
3/16/2006 10:00 AM
Yup, it's gotta be Laylee, seeing as how I don't spot any of the forementioned "equivalent of old man eyebrows all over his head."
3/16/2006 10:04 AM
Okay! The Laylee's win. This is the picture we entered of Laylee way back when. I was waiting to see what you guys had submitted of your kids before submitting one of Magoo.
That is my favorite photo of Laylee. Seattle cloudy light is perfect for photo-ops.
Chris and Jeana - that is scary. I'm fascinated to see the spin on this article. Seeing that Chris was included too makes me think they "found" us through the BoBs. Several of the judges and organizers are writers. Maybe one of them wrote the article. We shall see.
3/16/2006 10:11 AM
Grammy, I can't take the suspense. WHAT IS ON YOUR TOES?
3/16/2006 12:22 PM
Beautiful pic!
They would never put a picture of M in their magazine. His head is too fat, according to a random customer at Great Clips.
3/16/2006 1:03 PM
that picture is BEAUTIFUL, as is obviously, the child. Quoted in print as saying your kids eat off the floor? THat's just hilarious. You'll need to frame that, you know.
3/16/2006 1:27 PM
so, pray tell, what ingenouse technique dod you use in Photoshop to edit the light and "fuzz factor" in the background?
It should go without saying, but here it is, of course the image is beautiful and the child is very adorable.
3/16/2006 1:34 PM
No Photoshopping there. In fact, that is one photo that has not been messed with in any way digitally.
I took it on film with my Grandpa's 70s Pentax SLR. I adjusted the aperture and the distance from Laylee to make the background appear fuzzy. This one is a scan of a print from film, not even cropped in Photoshop. (super rare for me)

Heidi, The toes are an art masterpiece of Laylee's. One morning last spring when I was apparently not fancy enough for the child, she decorated me with jack o'lantern stickers and DYM took this picture for posterity. When DYM set up my site: grammyrules.blogspot.com (I'm not quite that conceited yet.) she put up this picture to go with hers.
3/16/2006 2:30 PM
Ah yes, seeing both photos together, it's quite obvious all those toes are related...
3/16/2006 3:09 PM
Oh, you are going to have some talent agencies contacting you now that you've posted this picture. Look at that precious FACE!
And so cool about the magazine. Keep us all posted if you actually end up in the article, so we can all run out and steal our OB/GYN's copies.
3/16/2006 3:09 PM
That is such an adorable photo!
3/16/2006 3:53 PM
Check your email with a nice surprise! The ARTICLE!!!!
3/16/2006 4:52 PM
"I know that one of us can nail this thing." ROFL! Blogmommies unite!
3/16/2006 8:17 PM
Oh, that is one beautiful photo, all right! I love it so much it is still on my current "precious photos" shelf, even though it isn't especially recent. And congratulations to you about that magazine! And good for the editors of that magazine, for seeing your genius, even if it is the "eating off the floor" post! You are always fun to read! (And you have fun and funny people who post comments-"the other white meat!") boooya! Hugs alot. Pam
3/17/2006 9:10 AM
That is a beautiful picture. How dare they not choose it!
3/17/2006 5:54 PM
That picture still rules. :) I wish I could enter Bean. She's too dang old! Zut!
3/19/2006 9:32 PM
